Easy Improv Tips for DMs & Players

Improv isn’t about being fast.
It’s about staying present when the story shifts.

The 3–2–1 Framework

When you’re unsure what to do, think 3–2–1:

  • Three steps – Break the problem into three quick actions.
  • Two types – Offer two options or paths forward.
  • One thing – Focus on the most important next move.

It’s simple, flexible, and works whether you’re playing or running the game.

Say the Next True Thing

Start with what’s obvious. Stating something true keeps scenes alive and gives others something to build on.

  • “You’re bleeding.”
  • “The building is crumbling all around us!”
  • “It’s getting dark, and we are running out of time.”

Use One Strong Sense

Describe one thing clearly — smell, sound, or texture.

  • “The forge smells like wet iron.”
  • “The room smells like smoke.”
  • “It’s hard to think over the sound of the wind gusting around you.”

Call for a Roll

If you need a second to think, ask for a roll. Players stay engaged, and you buy time to plan your next move.

Borrow from Real Life

Base NPCs on people you know. It’s an easy way to create believable personalities fast.

Let Silence Work

A short pause adds tension and realism. Even music needs space between notes.

Big Takeaway

Good improv isn’t speed. It’s about presence.
Focus on what’s true right now, and build from there.
