Using ChatGPT to Write a D&D Adventure
I’ve been playing around with AI tools like ChatGPT to see how they can help generate ideas for D&D sessions, and I’ve been genuinely impressed with what they can do. You can start with a simple prompt like “Write a D&D adventure for my gaming group,” and in seconds you get a basic outline: a three-act structure, NPCs, and even a plot twist.
One thing I noticed is how adaptable these tools can be. I tried switching the setting from a city to a mountain town, then to an underwater kingdom, and ChatGPT adjusted the details each time. It even gave me different names for shopkeepers, complete with physical descriptions and roleplaying hooks.
Of course, it’s not flawless—some of the plots can feel a bit “on rails” or generic, and you still have to do the work of shaping it into something special. But it’s fantastic for those moments when you’re feeling stuck or when you want to shake up your usual routine.
I found it especially helpful to use AI as a co-DM—someone to bounce ideas off of and get those creative juices flowing. And for newer DMs, it’s a way to see how story elements might fit together without having to start from a completely blank page.
If you’re curious to see exactly how I used ChatGPT and how you might integrate it into your own game prep, take a look at the full video. And I’d love to hear in the comments if you’ve tried using AI for your games—what’s worked, what hasn’t, and any cool ideas you’ve discovered.
Cheers,
