How to Use Dungeon Master Screen Notes
When you see a Dungeon Master’s screen propped up at the table, it’s more than just a dramatic prop. It’s a tool packed with quick-reference notes, improvisational cues, and rules reminders that make the DM’s job a whole lot easier. In this video, I take you behind my screen to show you exactly what I keep on hand—and why.
For me, the DM screen is like a proscenium arch in theater: it frames the story, letting players focus on what’s happening in-game while giving me a private space to keep everything organized. My notes cover the essentials: combat actions, conditions, skill checks, saving throws, and even quick summaries of common spells like Healing Word and Detect Magic. No more flipping through books mid-game!
I also include pages of descriptive words—grouped by senses and moods—to help me bring NPCs and environments to life on the fly. Plus, a list of names for characters, taverns, or inns, so I’m never stuck when the party asks, “What’s the barkeep’s name?” Even when players decide to visit unexpected locations, I’ve got ideas ready to go.
Another big section in my notes is for “Skill Challenges.” Even though these aren’t part of the core 5e rules, they’re great for creating cinematic, fast-paced scenes outside of combat—like social challenges or puzzle encounters.
I share tips for how to adapt these notes for your own game: don’t feel like you have to include everything I do. Use what’s helpful for you, and customize the rest. The beauty of a DM screen is that it’s entirely yours.
And because I’m celebrating reaching 200 subscribers on the channel, I’m giving away the PDF of these very notes for free—available until the end of August 2022. After that, you’ll still be able to find them in my Etsy shop. If you’re curious, check the video description for the download link.
So if you’re a DM who wants to run smoother games, improvise faster, and keep the table focused on the story—these notes might be just what you need. Let me know in the comments if you’ve got your own favorite DM screen hacks or if there’s something you’d like to see me add to mine.
Cheers!
